Victory at Home for Senna Agius Who Makes History at Phillip Island

Senna Agius stormed to an incredible victory today, where in front of a cheering home crowd the 20-year-old became the first-ever Australian to win a Moto2™ race at Phillip Island, crossing the line 3.684s ahead of David Alonso and Diogo Moreira.

Agius stole the show in today’s Powered by Triumph Moto2 race, who had a dream start off the line passing pole sitter Moreira to take the lead into turn one, and never looked back. Controlling the 23-lap race, the Australian kept his cool throughout, where lap-by-lap he extended his lead over a chasing pack behind to take the win, his second of the season.

Meanwhile the battle for the title closed up between Moreira and Manuel Gonzalez, where in the early stages of the race the championship rivals were side by side fighting for the remaining podium spots, but close behind Alonso, Dani Holgado and Jake Dixon all wanted a slice of podium action.

By lap 15 the battle continued to rage, Moreira had passed Gonzalez, and just a lap later the championship leader had Alonso now hot on his heels and his sights set on the podium. With six laps to go, Alonso had moved into third, which he quickly converted into second place using the strengths of his Street Triple 765 RS engine to pass Moreira. As the riders continued to trade places, Gonzalez dropped back, with Dixon and Holdago now ahead. Meanwhile, Barry Baltus was impressively charging through the pack having made his way into the top ten from 22nd, and was putting pressure on the riders in front.

At the chequered flag it was Agius over the line first, followed by Alonso who managed to defend second place from a charging Moreira who finished just behind in third. Holgado was fourth ahead of Dixon, whilst Baltus claimed sixth ahead of Gonzalez who had to settle for seventh.

After today’s results the title fight has closed up even more, with now just two points separating Gonzalez (247 points) and Moreira (245 points) with just three races left of the 2026 season. Moto2 action resumes next weekend from Sepang, Malaysia for Round 20 on 24-26 October.
